One of my male "friends" tried to tell me today that the word rape didn't mean "the act of forcing sexual acts". He said it could mean destroy or plunder something that's not a person. how would you suggest I handle the issue
The types of young men who minimize rape are precisely the young men we need to be afraid of; these are the men who don’t believe rape culture exists. These are the men who ignore the reality of violence against women and children and make excuses for rapists.
If we want to end rape culture, we need to start taking this type of violence seriously.
Actually, I believe he is correct. I am no Latin expert, but I did take a semester in college. And the meaning for the root verb for the commonly used rapina/rapinae means essentially ‘to plunder’. Ovid used that word a lot.
I am no etymologist, but I would stand to believe my Latin professor when he said that is where the word rape derived from.
And this was after we read myth upon myth of Jupiter ‘seducing’ women.
Can someone with a Latin degree please verify this?
